Featured Florist | KD Floral and Gardens

On the corner of 4th St and Minnesota Ave resides the small floral shop KD Floral and Gardens.  But don’t let the size of their shop fool you.  Once known for its bright teal exterior it has become a go to shop for brides in the lakes area and beyond.  Packed to the brim with one of a kind gifts, plants and everything in between it is a must visit location for anyone in town.  Whether you’re a bride looking for that stunning  and unique arrangement for your bridal bouquet or simply looking for something for yourself, this shop is the perfect spot.  Be careful, it’s easy to get lost in all of the goodies here!

Over my years as a wedding photographer in the Bemidji area they have become my number one recommendation for brides when it comes to entrusting their floral needs on their big day.  The most common things I hear from brides on and after their wedding day is not only how friendly and knowledgable the staff is but how amazing and creative they are.   I personally love how they take a brides colors and when given the creative leeway they put together a floral masterpiece that is unlike any other bride’s bouquet.  They truly have a gift at this shop.

I spent a morning with the ladies of KD Floral and got to see behind the curtain and of course had many questions.

What does a typical day at KD look like?

Every day is truly different – it keeps everything exciting!  A day may look something like this:

1. COFFEE

2. Process new flowers that have arrived from growers and wholesalers

3. Prepare orders for the day and send delivery driver on his way

4. customer love all day!

5. Plant care (yes….we talk to them….)

6. Create create create – arrangements, signature wrapped bouquets, plantscapes, floor displays…..

Each day is also laced with lots of laughter, more coffee and lots of amazement at the flower goodness around us.

A question that gets asked ALL the time, why is it KD Floral?   Owned and operated by Raechel, it seems like it can get a little confusing.

The original owners of the store was a mother daughter team Kate and Dianne.  I worked for them in the beginning when I knew nothing – they taught me so much.  I purchased the store from them in 2008 and kept the name.

Ok, so does everyone who work here garden?  Personally I would love to work in a floral shop for fun but have SUCH a black thumb.

Yes – we are greenhouse addicts!  The best part of this job is being able to be around so much beauty all the time…it’s hard not to take it home or want it where you live every day also.  It’s a common thread of everyone on our team – our awe for nature.

Coming up on the blog we’ll be starting a series of floral themed posts.  Everything from educational posts for brides to fun behind the scenes at some of the local growers in the area!  I can’t wait to share everything I’ve learned from Raechel and the girls!
